What has happened?

Reported fact

Matthias Jaissle has spent the opening weeks of the season running one of the most aggressive, and most organised, pressing schemes in the Premier League. The scouting interest around him is not new; the volume of it is.

Reported fact and GafferLens analysis are labelled separately throughout this piece. Where a claim originates outside GafferLens, it is attributed.

Why it matters

Elite clubs rarely hire for pressing intensity alone. Intensity is coachable. What is far harder to find is a coach whose press is a possession structure in disguise — one where the shape that wins the ball is already the shape that attacks.

That is the specific thing recruiters keep circling back to. Jaissle's first pass after a turnover is almost never a clearance; it is a pre-agreed line into a runner who started moving before the ball was won.

The tactical impact

In possession the side builds with a back three and a single screening pivot, which pins two pressers and frees a full-back to step inside. Out of possession that same arrangement collapses into a narrow 4-2 front block that funnels play toward the touchline trap.

The result is a team that spends very little time in transition as a defensive event, because the counter-press begins from a shape that never fully committed forward.

The press is not the plan. The press is how the plan starts.

What the data says

Across the GafferLens rating set, Jaissle's pressing and transition indices sit clearly above his positional-control index — the signature of a coach who wants the ball back quickly rather than kept forever. Ratings are provisional prototype values.
