The rule of this list

Nobody is included to fill a slot. Every coach here is on the list because of a specific, describable thing they do — a build-up mechanism, a pressing trigger, a restart routine — that we would expect to survive a move upward.

Scandinavia: the build-up laboratory

The most interesting structural work in Europe right now is happening in leagues with short seasons and young squads, where coaches have to teach a system fast or lose the year.

Two coaches in that bracket run goalkeeper-integrated build-ups more advanced than several Big Five sides.

Second divisions: the pressure test

Promotion football is the closest thing coaching has to a stress test. A system that holds together through a 46-game season with a thin squad tends to hold together anywhere.
